Oxararfoss is a waterfall in Pingvellir National Park, Iceland. It flows from the river Oxara over the Almannagja. Despite being a relative small waterfall with a height of 13 meters and an average width of 6 meters it is a quite beautiful location. There is an easy path from the nearby car parking lot leading up to it, so it is easily accessible. During peak seasons like in the summer you should expect large crowds visiting Oxararfoss. The pool at the base of the waterfall is filled with rocks. Pingvellir National Park is one of the three famous sites of the Golden Circle, along with Gullfoss waterfall and the Geyser Geothermal Area.

Interestingly, Oxararfoss is a human-made waterfall! Geologists and historians have discovered that the river Öxará was moved in the 9th century to channel the water into the Almannagja gorge! The purpose was to provide water for the members and visitors of the Icelandic parliament Althingi in the 9th century.

To reach the waterfall you walk through the Almannagja gorge. This gorge marks the eastern boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates!

Oh, and for Game of Thrones funs you should know that the Almannagja gorge was used in multiple scenes of the TV series. So follow the path and explore the whole area!

Brunnhorn mountain in Iceland is known due to its distinctive shape which looks like a bat. Its three peaks have given it the nickname of the Batman mountain! For sure it is very popular among photographers. Since it is surrounded by water if there is no wind you can get a beautiful reflection of Brunnhorn! Along with Vestrahorn and Eystrahorn it is one of the three ‘Horny’ mountains of the Hvalnes peninsula in East Iceland. Brunnhorn is over a six hour drive from Reykjavik, so you’d better stay somewhere in the area if you want to see it. Checking for a settlement at the city of Hofn is ideal to explore the whole area. If you travel around the island it is definitely among the must see mountains when visiting Iceland!

We were paid back by an amazing sunset, which you can see here. An alpine red glow had covered the mountain peaks. The clouds had so many beautiful red, pink and orange tones. The next morning we went back and witnessed an amazing sunrise at Vestrahorn. The low freezing temperature had prohibited many tourists from getting there this autumn day. So, there weren’t too many photographers around. You can literally spend hours in this location especially if you are a photographer. You can photograph the reflection of the mountain, the black sand dunes and the waves with so many different compositions. However, be careful for the sneaker waves! They appear without warning!

Lavenders bloom in spring and create wonderful purple fields. For years I’ve been seeing photos of the iconic lavender fields in Provence, France. And they looked amazing! However I never had the chance to visit Provence. So, when I learned that there were lavender farms near the village of Mesimeri which is very close to my hometown, the city of Thessaloniki in Greece, I couldn’t miss the chance! With a fellow photographer we started exploring the area trying to find a minimal and beautiful field to capture. That tree on top of the hill looked great with the straight lavender lines leading to it. Then we had just to sit and wait for the sunset which came with beautiful colors in the sky. We also learned that mosquitoes love the fragrant lavender flowers!

Here are a few more lavender field photos I have captured in the same area!

Eystrahorn is another epic mountain, located on the south east coast of Iceland, very close to Vestrahorn. There were far less people here though, just another photographer. However it is very easy to get there due to its proximity to the Ring Road. Some people refer to it as a hidden Icelandic gem! Here you can see the mountain range reflected in a small water pool we found while we headed towards the beach. Reflections in Iceland are simply amazing!

Here you can see a perfect reflection of the mountain into the sea. A peak of Vestrahorn covered with snow can also be seen at the right. The fog that was covering the bottom of the mountain along with the sun rays created a wonderful landscape! The mountain’s unique silhouette, shaped by millennia of erosion, creates perfect reflections in surrounding calm waters on windless days, making it a top spot for landscape photography.

Its black color makes a wonderful contrast to the cloud mountains in the background. Although it is isolated this place is popular for weddings in Iceland! I was taking some photos when a girl with a yellow coat came close to the church and posed for her friend. I couldn’t resist not pressing the shutter.
