If you are looking for a photography destination that offers stunning natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and rich history, look no further than the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. This small region, located on the west coast of the island, is home to some of the most iconic and photogenic spots in the country. In this guide, I will share with you my tips and tricks for capturing the best shots of some of the most amazing locations on the peninsula.

Kirkjufell mountain

Reflection of Kirkjufell Mountain in Iceland in Black and White. Fine art prints are available.

Kirkjufell, or “Church Mountain”, is a 463-meter-high hill that rises from the sea like a sharp arrowhead. It is often called the most photographed mountain in Iceland, and for a good reason. Its unique shape, coastal location, and isolation from other mountains make it a perfect subject for photography. You can photograph Kirkjufell from different angles and distances, but the most popular spot is near the waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, where you can frame the mountain with the cascading water and the green fields. The best time to photograph Kirkjufell is during the golden hour, when the sun casts a warm glow on the mountain and the sky. If you are lucky, you might also catch the northern lights dancing above the mountain at night.

Malarrif lighthouse

Malarrif lighthouse. Fine art prints are available.

Malarrif Lighthouse is a white and red beacon that stands on the southern tip of the peninsula, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was built in 1917 and is still operational today. The lighthouse is surrounded by lava fields, cliffs, and beaches, creating a dramatic contrast between the man-made structure and the natural scenery. You can photograph the lighthouse from different perspectives, such as from the beach, from the cliff, or from the road. The lighthouse is especially photogenic during sunrise and sunset, when the light creates a colorful backdrop for the white tower. You can also visit the nearby visitor center, where you can learn more about the history and culture of the area.

Black church of Budir

Black church of Budir. Fine art prints are available.

The black church of Budir is a small wooden church that dates back to 1703. It is painted black and has a white cross on the roof, making it stand out from the surrounding landscape. The church is located in a remote area, near a hotel and a lava field. It is one of the three black churches in Iceland and has become a popular attraction for photographers and tourists. The church is a great example of minimalistic architecture and photography, as it creates a striking contrast with the green grass, the blue sky, and the white snow. You can photograph the church from different angles and distances, but the most common one is from the front, where you can capture the church and the mountains in the background.

Londrangar basalt cliffs

Londrangar basalt cliffs. Fine art prints are available.

Londrangar Basalt Cliffs are two rock pinnacles that protrude from the ocean, west of Malarrif. They are the remnants of an ancient volcanic crater that has been eroded by the sea over thousands of years. The taller pinnacle is 75 meters high and the shorter one is 61 meters high. They are often compared to a castle or a cathedral, due to their shape and size. The cliffs are a haven for seabirds, such as puffins, fulmars, and kittiwakes, which nest on the rocks and fly around them. You can photograph the cliffs from different viewpoints, such as from the road, from the beach, or from the hiking trail that leads to them. The best time to photograph the cliffs is during the golden hour, when the light enhances the texture and color of the rocks.

Gatklettur rock arch

Gatklettur rock arch. Fine art prints are available.

Gatklettur, or “Hellnar Arch”, is a natural stone arch that is formed by the wave action on the basalt rocks. It is located between the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, on the south coast of the peninsula. The arch is a stunning example of the power and beauty of nature, as it shows the swirling patterns and shapes of the rocks. You can photograph the arch from different angles and distances, but the most popular one is from the beach, where you can capture the arch and the ocean in the same frame. The best time to photograph the arch is during low tide, when the water level is lower and the arch is more visible. You can also photograph the arch during sunrise and sunset, when the light creates a magical atmosphere.

Skardsvik beach

Skardsvik beach

Skardsvik beach is a rare sight in Iceland, as it boasts golden sand instead of the usual black. The beach is located on the northwestern tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, near the village of Ondverdarnes. The contrast between the bright blue water, the yellow sand, and the dark lava cliffs creates a stunning scenery that attracts photographers and nature lovers. The beach is also a historical site, as it contains a cave that was used as a burial place in the past. Skardsvik beach is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse of the diversity and beauty of Iceland’s landscapes.

Djupalnssandur beach

Djupalnssandur beach

Djupalnssandur beach is a black-sand beach on the Snaefellsnes peninsula, where the remains of a British trawler that wrecked in 1948 can still be seen. The beach is also known for its four lifting stones, which were used to test the strength of fishermen in the past. The stones have different weights and names, and only the strongest men could lift the heaviest one. The beach offers a scenic view of the ocean and the nearby cliffs, as well as a glimpse of the history and culture of the area.

Conclusion

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a photographer’s paradise, as it offers a variety of locations and subjects to capture. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, you will find something that suits your style and interest. The peninsula is also a great place to explore and enjoy the nature, culture, and history of Iceland. I hope this guide has inspired you to visit and photograph the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

One of the most striking film locations in Iceland is Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. With its dramatic black sand, towering basalt columns, and crashing waves, this location has been featured in several films, including scenes from the popular TV series “Game of Thrones.” It provides a hauntingly beautiful backdrop that adds an air of mystery and intrigue to any production.

The mesmerizing beauty of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has captivated photographers and travelers alike for centuries. Photographing this natural phenomenon can be a truly rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of capturing stunning images of the Aurora Borealis, from planning your trip to choosing the right equipment and techniques.

Research and Planning

The Aurora Borealis is a breathtaking natural light display that occurs in the polar regions of the Earth. It is caused by the interaction between charged particles from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. The result is a mesmerizing spectacle of colorful lights dancing across the night sky, with hues of green, purple and pink.

Because early fall and early spring are statistically associated with higher levels of solar activity, the months of September, October and March are usually the best for viewing a spectacular display of the Northern Lights. Of course, large Northern Lights displays can be seen throughout the rest of the Aurora season.

However, there is no way to know in advance when they’ll take place. Always check the Aurora forecast. The higher the Kp index is, the best the Aurora will be. There are various applications you can install on your mobile phone which will show you the Aurora forecast. Of course you have to check the weather forecast as well. You need clear skies to view the Aurora!

Essential Equipment

Camera: Use a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls for better control over your settings.

Wide-angle lens: Opt for a lens with a wide field of view, ideally between 14mm and 24mm, to capture the vastness of the night sky.

Sturdy tripod: A stable tripod is crucial for long-exposure shots, as it helps eliminate camera shake.

Remote shutter release: Using a remote or cable release minimizes camera movement when capturing long exposures.

Extra batteries: Bring some spare batteries with you and keep them warm inside your jacket. The cold shortens the life of batteries.

Warm clothes: You are gonna spend much time standing still while waiting for the Aurora so dress properly.

Aurora Borealis over Skogafoss Waterfall in Iceland. Fine art prints are available.

Camera Settings

Manual mode: Switch to manual mode to have full control over exposure settings.

ISO: Probably you will need a high ISO (around 1600 – 3200) to capture the Aurora. Use the lowest needed to capture a photo with as less noise as possible.

Aperture: Set your aperture to its widest setting (around f/2.8 or lower) to gather as much light as possible.

Shutter speed: Depending on how fast the Aurora moves try a shutter speed of 2 to 5 seconds.

Composition and Framing

Foreground interest: Incorporate interesting foreground elements like trees, mountains, or bodies of water to add depth and context to your images.

Rule of thirds: Compose your shot using the rule of thirds, placing the horizon and the Aurora Borealis in different thirds of the frame.

Experiment with angles: Try shooting from different perspectives to capture unique and dynamic compositions.

Additional Tips

Use manual focus: Set your lens to manual focus and adjust it to infinity or slightly before, as autofocus often struggles in low-light conditions.

Bracketing: Capture multiple exposures of the same scene to ensure you have a properly exposed image.

Patience is key: The Aurora Borealis can be unpredictable, so be prepared to spend time waiting for the perfect moment.

Aurora Borealis dancing in the night sky of Iceland. Fine art prints are available.

Dettifoss waterfall is the second most powerful waterfall in Europe, located in Vatnajökull National Park in northeast Iceland. The falls are 100 meters (330 feet) wide and drop 44 meters (144 ft). Its water cascades into the Jökulsárgljfur canyon. It is a branch of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which originates in the Vatnajökull glacier. Dettifoss is part of the Diamond Circle, a popular tourist route in North Iceland that circles Hsavk and Lake Mývatn. If you want to visit this magnificent waterfall, Mývatn is a good place to stay.

To get to the east side, take Route 864, an old gravel road with numerous potholes that winds through an alien-like landscape. It takes about 45 minutes to get there from Route 1. A 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended. This road is usually only open during the summer. There is a small parking area at the end of the road. Follow the trail for about 400 meters until you reach the waterfall. You can get really close to the waterfall from here, and you won’t usually have to deal with water spray. The photo above was taken from the east side.

Standing next to this waterfall makes you feel and almost fearful of nature’s raw power as you watch the massive amount of water fall into the canyon river. It’s no surprise that Ridley Scott chose this spectacular scenery as the backdrop for the opening scene of his film Prometheus!

The west side is much more accessible. You exit Route 1 and drive for about 20 minutes on paved Route 862 until you reach the parking lot. There is an upper viewpoint from which to admire the impressive waterfall, or you can follow the path for about 800 meters and get close to the waterfall. When we arrived, it was quite windy, so we had to contend with a lot of spray.

So, if you have the time, I would recommend visiting both sides. It takes about an hour to get from one side to the other. Having said that, if I had to pick just one, I’d say the East side is much more impressive, while the West side is much easier to access!

It’s always fantastic seeing your photo published in a magazine! So, I was super excited when I learned that my photo from the interior of Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik will be published in Photographos magazine in Greece. The subject of this issue is textures and patterns. Here is my description:

A view of the interior of the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, Iceland. The south side of the building is covered in dodecahedrons. They were inspired by the basalt columns found throughout the country. The rhomboid and hexagonal sides combine to form a striking architectural design that immediately draws your attention. I noticed that getting close enough and looking up creates an impressive pattern that appears to go on forever. I preferred the black and white version of this photograph because it allowed me to concentrate on the geometric shapes and the contrast between the metal structure and the white light.

And here is the magazine’s comment.

These organic and wonderful repeating patterns, the cellular architectural structures reminded me of something. They are completely unique. Elements of a one-of-a-kind architecture from Reykjavik, Iceland’s distant capital, and specifically from the “Harpa Concert Hall.” The black and white is a wise choice here because it highlights the pattern’s structure in a simple and tight way. The use of a wide angle also emphasizes the structure’s perspective and dynamics. Great image in its simplicity, and proof that emphasizing one element is frequently more important than describing everything, which can be more verbose.

Grjótagjá is a small lava cave in Iceland near Lake Myvatn. There is a wonderful geothermal thermal spring inside. It is part of the Diamond Circle, North Iceland’s most popular sightseeing route. The cave has an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere that justifies a visit. The clear water has a beautiful turquoise color, as seen in the photo, and the sun illuminated the beautiful rocky walls when we were there.

History

Grjótagjá was a popular bathing spot until the 1970s. However, during the eruptions from 1975 to 1984, the temperature of the water rose to more than 50 °C (122 °F), though the temperature has since dropped below 50 °C. During our visit, another tourist informed us that bathing here is now dangerous due to bacteria.

Game of Thrones filming location

Game of Thrones season three spoiler ahead! Grjotagja gained fame as a result of the HBO television series Game of Thrones. In “Kissed by Fire,” the fifth episode of season three, protagonist Jon Snow and the wildling woman Ygritte consummate their relationship. In fact, the majority of this scene was shot in the studio, and the waterfall was added using CGI. As a result, many tourists come to see where Jon Snow and Ygritte had sex!

Tips for visiting

So, if you’re traveling around Iceland on the Ring Road, it’s worth stopping here to enjoy this wonderful pool cave. There is a parking lot near the cave. There is usually a steady stream of tourists coming and going, so you must be patient. Be cautious of the jagged rocks that line the narrow entrance. You can go to the right side of the cave, which has more space. After that, you can look at the entry on the left side.

Final words

To summarize, Grjotagja lava cave is well worth a visit, albeit you may have to wait a bit to get inside.

Skogafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a width of 25 metres (82 feet) and a drop of 60 metres (200 feet). Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.

According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The legend continues that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again. The ring was allegedly given to the local church. The old church door ring is now in the Skógar museum.

Skogafoss, along with Seljalandfoss, is part of the Golden Circle route. It offers great photo opportunities, especially in winter when the Northern Lights dance across the sky. We were lucky enough to have a clear night and enjoy Aurora Borealis in this majestic location.

At the top right of the waterfall there is also a vantage point. If you climb the 370 steps to the top of the hill you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view out over south Iceland’s coastline. This is also the start of the Fimmvorduhals pass, a popular hiking route.

Since this waterfall is easily accessible you will find many tourists no matter what time of the day it is. It is just a two hour drive from Reykjavik (155km), and 28km from Seljalandsfoss. Follow the ring road eastwards from Reykjavik, and eventually you will be able to see Skogafoss from the road. There is also a camping area next to it in case you want to spend the night there.

Most people seem to spend 10-15 minutes in this location. However we visited Skogafoss more than once. In fact we visited it early in the morning when it was just us, in the evening where there were much more people and in the night when Aurora Borealis was dancing above the magnificent waterfall!

No wonder why this beautiful waterfall is such a famous travel destination! And if you don’t mind getting a little wet you can get really close to the waterfall!

If you like my photos of Skogafoss waterfall they are all available as fine art prints, metal prints, canvas and other products!

Oxararfoss is a waterfall in Pingvellir National Park, Iceland. It flows from the river Oxara over the Almannagja. Despite being a relative small waterfall with a height of 13 meters and an average width of 6 meters it is a quite beautiful location. There is an easy path from the nearby car parking lot leading up to it, so it is easily accessible. During peak seasons like in the summer you should expect large crowds visiting Oxararfoss. The pool at the base of the waterfall is filled with rocks. Pingvellir National Park is one of the three famous sites of the Golden Circle, along with Gullfoss waterfall and the Geyser Geothermal Area.

Interestingly, Oxararfoss is a human-made waterfall! Geologists and historians have discovered that the river Öxará was moved in the 9th century to channel the water into the Almannagja gorge! The purpose was to provide water for the members and visitors of the Icelandic parliament Althingi in the 9th century.

To reach the waterfall you walk through the Almannagja gorge. This gorge marks the eastern boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates!

Oh, and for Game of Thrones funs you should know that the Almannagja gorge was used in multiple scenes of the TV series. So follow the path and explore the whole area!

Brunnhorn mountain in Iceland is known due to its distinctive shape which looks like a bat. Its three peaks have given it the nickname of the Batman mountain! For sure it is very popular among photographers. Since it is surrounded by water if there is no wind you can get a beautiful reflection of Brunnhorn! Along with Vestrahorn and Eystrahorn it is one of the three ‘Horny’ mountains of the Hvalnes peninsula in East Iceland. Brunnhorn is over a six hour drive from Reykjavik, so you’d better stay somewhere in the area if you want to see it. Checking for a settlement at the city of Hofn is ideal to explore the whole area. If you travel around the island it is definitely among the must see mountains when visiting Iceland!
