Safety First

While photographing lightning can be exciting, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. I prefer photographing lightning from a distance and always make sure I pack up my stuff and leave before the thunderstorm catches me in case it is heading towards me. Here are some safety precautions to keep in mind:

• Stay Indoors: Avoid photographing lightning in open areas during a storm. Find a safe shelter and shoot from a window or covered area.
• Use Lightning Apps: Utilize lightning detection apps to track the storm’s movement and ensure your safety.
• Avoid Metal Objects: Stay away from metal tripods or other conductive objects that can attract lightning.

Choose the Right Gear

• A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls
• A wide-angle or standard zoom lens
• A sturdy tripod
• A remote shutter release or intervalometer
• Optionally a neutral density (ND) filter for daytime shots

Camera Settings

When setting out to photograph lightning, your camera settings play a pivotal role in capturing the dramatic spectacle. I always use manual mode in these cases to have complete control over my settings. Here are some recommended settings:

• ISO: 100-400, depending on the available light
• Aperture: f/8 to f/11 for a good depth of field
• Shutter speed: A long exposure of 10-30 seconds
• Focus: Manual focus on infinity or a distant object

Remember, these settings are a starting point, and you may need to adjust based on the storm’s intensity and distance. Always review your shots and tweak settings as necessary for the best results.

Compose Your Shot

Once you’ve set up your camera, it’s time to compose your shot. Look for interesting foreground elements like buildings, trees, or landscapes that can add depth and context to your lightning photos. Use photography composition techniques like the rule of thirds or leading lines to create a balanced and visually appealing composition.

Putting it all together

When photographing lightning, I first focus on finding a strong composition that highlights the direction and movement of the bolts. Once I’ve framed my shot, I finalize my camera settings to achieve a well-exposed image. Since lightning is an extremely bright light source, I tend to slightly underexpose my shots to avoid overblown highlights. To capture multiple strikes efficiently, I utilize my camera’s intervalometer function to shoot continuously. Alternatively, I use a remote shutter release and lock it in place to take a series of exposures back-to-back. With my camera set up and ready to go, all that’s left is to wait patiently for a dramatic lightning bolt to strike within my frame.

What is Blue Hour?

The remaining sunlight scatters through the atmosphere, creating a stunning display of deep blues, inky indigos, and sometimes even hints of pink and orange. This captivating light lasts for roughly 20-30 minutes, making it a precious window for photographers to capture unique and evocative images.

How to Shoot During Blue Hour

Here are some essential tips and tricks to help you master blue hour photography!

Plan and scout your location beforehand: One of the key aspects of blue hour photography is careful planning and scouting of your location. Understanding the timing of the blue hour and the specific location where you want to shoot is crucial for capturing the perfect shot. By arriving early and scouting the area, you can identify potential compositions and plan how to incorporate the elements of the scene into your frame. The mesmerizing beauty of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has captivated photographers and travelers alike for centuries. Photographing this natural phenomenon can be a truly rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of capturing stunning images of the Aurora Borealis, from planning your trip to choosing the right equipment and techniques.

Research and Planning

The Aurora Borealis is a breathtaking natural light display that occurs in the polar regions of the Earth. It is caused by the interaction between charged particles from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. The result is a mesmerizing spectacle of colorful lights dancing across the night sky, with hues of green, purple and pink.

Because early fall and early spring are statistically associated with higher levels of solar activity, the months of September, October and March are usually the best for viewing a spectacular display of the Northern Lights. Of course, large Northern Lights displays can be seen throughout the rest of the Aurora season.

However, there is no way to know in advance when they’ll take place. Always check the Aurora forecast. The higher the Kp index is, the best the Aurora will be. There are various applications you can install on your mobile phone which will show you the Aurora forecast. Of course you have to check the weather forecast as well. You need clear skies to view the Aurora!

Essential Equipment

• Camera: Use a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls for better control over your settings.
• Wide-angle lens: Opt for a lens with a wide field of view, ideally between 14mm and 24mm, to capture the vastness of the night sky.
• Sturdy tripod: A stable tripod is crucial for long-exposure shots, as it helps eliminate camera shake.
• Remote shutter release: Using a remote or cable release minimizes camera movement when capturing long exposures.
• Extra batteries: Bring some spare batteries with you and keep them warm inside your jacket. The cold shortens the life of batteries.
• Warm clothes: You are gonna spend much time standing still while waiting for the Aurora so dress properly.

Camera Settings

• Manual mode: Switch to manual mode to have full control over exposure settings.
• ISO: Probably you will need a high ISO (around 1600 – 3200) to capture the Aurora. Use the lowest needed to capture a photo with as less noise as possible.
• Aperture: Set your aperture to its widest setting (around f/2.8 or lower) to gather as much light as possible.
• Shutter speed: Depending on how fast the Aurora moves try a shutter speed of 2 to 5 seconds.

Composition and Framing

• Foreground interest: Incorporate interesting foreground elements like trees, mountains, or bodies of water to add depth and context to your images.
• Rule of thirds: Compose your shot using the rule of thirds, placing the horizon and the Aurora Borealis in different thirds of the frame.

Astrophotography allows us to capture the mesmerizing beauty of the night sky, but achieving sharp focus in low light conditions can be a challenge. Precise focus is crucial for capturing breathtaking images of celestial objects. In this article, we will explore some essential tips and techniques to help you achieve sharp focus in nighttime astrophotography.

Use Manual Focus

Switching to manual focus mode is crucial for astrophotography. Auto-focus systems struggle in low light conditions, often resulting in blurry images. Take control and adjust the focus manually using the focus ring on your lens. Find a bright star and use the magnification feature on your camera’s Live View to carefully fine-tune the focus until the star appears as a pinpoint of light.

Utilize Manual Focus Assist Tools

Some cameras offer manual focus assist tools. Features like focus peaking or digital zoom can significantly aid in achieving precise focus. Enable these tools in your camera’s settings and utilize them to ensure accurate focusing on the stars.

Utilize Infinity Focus

In astrophotography, many subjects are at an infinite distance from the camera. To ensure sharp focus, set your lens to infinity focus. Most lenses have an infinity symbol (∞) on the focus ring. Align this symbol with the marker or use trial and error to find the precise point of infinity focus. A piece of tape can help secure the focus ring in place.

Utilize Hyperfocal Distance

When shooting astrophotography (or landscapes and cityscapes) at night, utilizing the hyperfocal distance technique can be advantageous. By setting your lens to the hyperfocal distance, you can achieve maximum depth of field, ensuring sharp focus from the foreground to the background. Use a hyperfocal distance calculator or smartphone app to determine the ideal settings for your lens and aperture.

Take Test Shots

To confirm that you have achieved sharp focus, take test shots of the night sky and review them on your camera’s LCD screen. Zoom in to inspect the stars for sharpness and adjust the focus if necessary. It may take a few attempts to achieve the desired focus, so be patient and persistent.

Use a Bahtinov Mask

A Bahtinov mask is a helpful tool for achieving precise focus in astrophotography. It consists of a patterned mask placed over the front of the lens. When properly focused, the mask produces a distinct pattern of diffraction spikes around bright stars. Adjust the focus until the spikes are symmetrical and centered, indicating optimal focus.

Have you ever wanted to remove the stars in your astrophotography photos? Perhaps you want to focus on the details of your deep-sky object, or maybe you want to process the stars and the object separately to achieve a punchy image without blowing out the stars. Whatever your reason, there is a simple and free software called StarNet (formerly known as StarNet++) that can help you. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to use StarNet to remove stars from your photos.

StarNet is a neural network-based software that removes stars from images in a single step. It works by analyzing your image and determining which pixels are stars and which are the background or the object. The star pixels are then replaced with an interpolation of the surrounding pixels, resulting in a starless image.

Download StarNet++

First download StarNet from its official website. The command line tool is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS. The Mac OS version is relatively new and still experimental so you might find some bugs. The graphical user interface version is available only for Windows. Choose the one that matches your operating system and download it.

Extract StarNet++

Once you have downloaded StarNet, you will need to extract it. You will get a folder called StarNetv2CLI_Win. Inside this folder, you will find the starnet++.exe application file if you have downloaded the command line tool or starnetGUI.exe if you have downloaded the graphical user interface version.

Run StarNet++

All you need to do now is place your astrophotography image in the same folder where StarNet is stored. The image must be in .TIF format. Then, drag and drop your image file onto the appropriate application icon if you have downloaded the command line tool or use the browse button of the graphical user interface button to load your image. A black window will appear and StarNet will begin removing stars from your image.

Check Your Results

When StarNet finishes processing your image, it will create a new file with -Starless appended to its name. For example, if your original image was called DSF4902.tif, then your starless image will be called DSF4902-Starless.tif. You can open this file with any image viewer or editor and check your results.

You should see that all the stars have been removed from your image, leaving only the background. Depending on your image, you may see some artifacts in the starless image, but you can fix them later with some post-processing.

Process Your Images

Now that you have removed the stars from your image, you can process it as you wish. Open both images in Photoshop with the starless image at the top. Next change its blend mode to Difference and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + e to create a stamp of the visible layers. This will create a layer which contains only the stars.

Next, you can enhance the details of your starless image, adjust the colors and contrast, reduce noise and artifacts, etc. You can also process your stars only image separately if you want to add some saturation and vibrance or adjust the temperature for example.

Add the Stars Back

If you want to add your stars back to your final image, make sure the stars only image is at the top and change its blend mode from Normal to Screen. You can also adjust its opacity if you want to make the stars less prominent. You can even apply a star reduction technique.

Final Words

And that’s it! You have successfully removed and added back the stars to your astrophotography image using StarNet++. This technique works great for wide angle astrophotography images like landscape images with the Milky Way! I hope you found this blog post helpful and informative. Photographers tend to avoid overcast weather. I prefer taking photos at sunset or sunrise because the light is best during the golden hour. Nevertheless, a cloudy day offers some opportunities for stunning photography. Clouds do an excellent job of diffusing harsh lighting and transforming it into soft, flattering light. In this article I‘ll try to give you some ideas for what to photograph on cloudy days!

Head to the Coast

On cloudy days, I find coastal locations very compelling. The coast has a wide range of subjects that are well-suited to the soft light created by cloudy skies, such as boats, piers, lighthouses, and jetties.

Dramatic Clouds

If the sky isn’t completely grey and flat on an overcast day, you can find some amazing cloud formations. Make use of the clouds to create a strong, dramatic look in your photographs.

Use a Long Exposure

Long exposures are an obvious choice for minimalist coastal photography. If you leave the shutter open for 30 seconds or more, the water will be captured as a smooth, glassy surface, removing ripples and simplifying its texture. Similarly, any movement in the clouds during the exposure smoothes and softens the texture of the sky, simplifying the composition even more. To achieve a long exposure, you’ll need to use a neutral density filter. A 10 stop neutral density filter is required for daytime shooting.

Take Minimal Pictures

You can get an aesthetically pleasing, minimal shot by combining the long exposure with a simple element found in the sea, such as a tree branch or some poles. In the picture above I used a 10 stop ND filter to get a 30 seconds exposure in order to make the water appear really smooth.

Shoot in Black and White

As you may have noticed, all my photographs in this article are black and white. I believe that the absence of color really enhances the overcast weather and simplifies the long exposures and minimal pictures. I’ve written a detailed post on when to turn a picture into black and white if you want to have a further look! You can even switch your camera to black and white preview mode, if it supports it, to focus on the shapes and textures while ignoring the colors in your frame!

Conclusion

A gloomy day or overcast weather may not appear appealing, but it can provide excellent photographic opportunities. Use the diffused light and cloud formations to your advantage. Make long exposure photos or use clouds to add texture to your scene. Play around with black and white photography. Also, even on overcast days, try to come up with creative ways to compose your photos.

I find photographing lone trees to be very appealing. Those photos are stunning in their minimalism and overall simplicity. Standing alone in a hostile environment, a lone tree represents loneliness, solitude, peace, or even strength!

When taking a photograph, it is important to consider not only what is in the frame, but also what is left out. And by that I mean that, while most people want to photograph the amazing scenery in front of them, focusing on a single element or subject can yield a great image. So, let’s look at some tips and tricks on how to photograph a lone tree.

Composition

The rule of thirds is a good composition rule or guideline to start at all times. Place your tree on one of the intersections of a 3 by 3 grid on your frame. Then, for your foreground, use the bottom third and the top two thirds for the sky, or vice versa. And there you have it. The rule of thirds will assist you in balancing the elements in your frame. However, if you don’t have something interesting to balance out the tree, your photo will fall flat.

However, when photographing lone trees, I always try to place them dead center, in the middle of the frame. Most of the time, this results in a symmetrical and well-balanced image. You also make your subject, a lone tree, stand out in the frame. The viewer is aware of where to look.

Lenses

Again, there is no universal rule. It is determined by the scene you wish to photograph. However, using a telephoto lens will assist you in distinguishing the lone tree from the rest of the scene. You could also try a wide lens. Get close to your subject and look for a strong foreground element or some leading lines to draw the viewer’s attention to it.

Weather conditions

Landscape photography is always affected by the light and weather conditions. A sunrise or sunset will get you off to a good start. Try to find an interesting background that is distinct from your main subject. A beautiful tree silhouette, even if it is leafless, will create a strong subject.

Try photographing a lone tree in the middle of the day with a clear sky! The green of the tree in the following photo contrasts beautifully with the clear blue sky and yellow flowers.

A woodland photograph is always enhanced by fog and atmosphere. Because woodland is chaotic with so many things going on, fog can help separate a tree from the background and simplify the entire scene.

I also enjoy astrophotography with lone trees. By positioning the tree in front of the Milky Way, a strong background is created. You can also play with star trails.

Putting it all together

The following tree was photographed over a few hours, beginning before sunset and continuing through the night. As you can see, the same composition can produce a wide range of images depending on the lighting and time of day.

You may ask why reflections are good in photography. Consider a lovely scene. Then multiply this by two! Jokes aside, reflections are a creative photography tool, and there’s nothing quite like the effect they create when used correctly. And the reason for this is that symmetry is very appealing to many people. So, let’s look at how you can use the mirror effect to improve your photography.

Reflections in landscapes and seascapes

Landscapes and seascapes provide numerous opportunities for photographing reflections. Early in the morning, before the sunrise, is the best time to get a really smooth and calm water surface. Of course, you must check the weather to ensure that there is no wind or rain to disrupt the stillness of the water. We saw so many reflections just before sunrise on our road trip around Iceland. Those reflections were usually gone when the sun came up.

Reflections in cityscapes

If you live in the city, the best time to capture some reflections is right after it rains, while there are still puddles and the roads are wet. Even a small puddle will suffice. Just make sure you get down and very close to it. If you have a bottle of water with you, you can always make your own puddle!

Photographing a reflection

When taking a photograph, you usually keep the rule of thirds in mind. With reflections, however, it is almost always better to place the horizon in the center of the image to create a really strong symmetry. Of course, you can also experiment by placing the horizon in the bottom third of the frame.

Final words

Of course, a reflection isn’t enough to make a great photograph. You must also find a compelling subject. As always, practice is essential. Go outside and look for reflections. Autumn is quickly approaching, and it’s a fantastic time of year for photography. It’s a wonderful experience to watch the trees’ leaves change colors, and you can get some great photos out of it. In this tutorial I am going to give you some fall photography tips to take great Autumn photos.

Scout in advance

Because fall colors only last a couple weeks, you must be well prepared. Explore old and new locations for potential compositions. This way, when the leaves turn orange and yellow, you’ll know where to go and what to photograph. Of course, your composition could well change slightly, but you will have a starting point. Instead of walking around with your big camera, you can use your phone to take quick photos and use them as a reference.

Use a fall foliage map

This primarily applies to those who live in the United States. Every year, SmokyMountains.com publishes a prediction map showing how the colors of the trees change across the United States. Simply use the slider at the bottom of the map to select a date, and the colors will indicate where the foliage will peak that week. This will make planning your trip much easier.

Experiment

There are several types of shots you can try when photographing in the woods. Zoom shots, wide vistas, and close-up details With so much going on in a forest, a wide shot isn’t always the best option for woodland photography. So, in addition to your wide-angle lens, use a zoom lens. Use compression to your advantage and remove any elements that make your image appear cluttered. You can also try to get close-up shots of an autumn scene to show the details. Running water can also enhance your scene significantly.

Use a polarizing filter

Polarizing filters are typically used to eliminate glare caused by reflective materials. They are, however, excellent tools for increasing contrast and saturation and changing the overall feel of a scene. This will help you in emphasizing the beautiful fall colors. It’s not always the best option, but it’s always worth a shot when it’s raining or very wet.

Look for reflections

A nice reflection is always appealing. So, if you can find some trees near a lake or a small pond, try to photograph them to make the most of the colorful leaves. The best time to find still water is early in the morning.

Use indirect light

Normally, strong sunlight casts harsh shadows that are unappealing. Shooting on cloudy, overcast, or even rainy days, on the other hand, can really highlight the fall color tones. 

Look for fog

A woodland photograph can be taken to the next level by the use of fog. It helps to separate your foreground element and gives your photo a misty look. Check a weather app to see when there will be fog in your area and take advantage of the opportunity to get out and take some photos.

Slow down your aperture

It’s sometimes better not to have everything in focus when photographing in the woods. With so many leaves and trees around, you can experiment with a shallower depth of field to simplify your photograph.

Play with the White Balance

Consider the different types of white balance. Shade or Cloudy can really bring out the fall colors and warm up the scene. Of course, shooting in RAW rather than JPEG allows you to easily adjust the white balance later in post-production.

A silhouette is traditionally the image of a person, animal, object, or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, with its edges matching the subject’s outline. Capturing a silhouette in your photos adds a sense of mystery because the viewers are free to fill in the blanks with their own stories. In this tutorial, I’ll show you a few simple tips and tricks that work great for silhouette photography. This way, you can ensure that your silhouette photos are always stunning.

Shoot against the source of light

The first step in making a silhouette is to position your subject, or the shape you want to black out, in front of a light source. A sunset or sunrise is an excellent place to begin. Put your subject in front of it and shoot towards the sun during the golden hour, when the sun is really low on the horizon.

Find interesting and unique subjects

Although you can make a silhouette out of anything, finding an interesting subject is essential for capturing a great silhouette photo. Pay close attention to the outline of your subject to accomplish this. It must be something easily identified. People make excellent silhouette subjects. However, you must pay attention to the position of the body and face, as they can make a significant difference even if they are not visible. Additionally, try to make distinct shapes. Do not, for example, place a person in front of a tree.

Expose for the background

To create a silhouette, you must first expose for the background. The dynamic range of our cameras is limited. If you expose correctly for the light source in a scene with too much light, the shadows will turn black. You can accomplish this by using manual mode. Spot metering can also be used on the light source, the brightest part of your frame. However, you must be careful not to get your subject out of focus. This could happen if your subject is much closer to you, like when you are photographing a sunset, for example. I usually focus on my subject and then I use the Exposure Compensation dial to underexpose the photo till I get a nice silhouette.

Final Words

Silhouettes are dramatic photographs that rely on shape and, in some cases, vibrant, saturated color to tell a story. I love those kinds of photos! But be careful, if you are using a DSLR, avoid looking directly into the sun through the viewfinder as this can harm your eyes!
